LOVELAND, United States (AFP) — Cristiano da Matta's condition has "stabilized" unless the Champ Car driver remained in intensive care with swelling around his brain, sum of two units days after a crash in testing, his RuSport team said.

Chris Pinderski, the Champ Car director of medical affairs, said in a statement from the Neenah, Wisconsin, hospital that the swelling was to be wait fored after the significant head injury experienceed by the Brazilian on Thursday.

Da Matta required pass surgery to treat a subdural hematoma after colliding with a deer that had scud onto the Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. He was airlifted to Neenah for treatment.

"Cristiano da Matta remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Theda Clark Medical Center in subordination to the direct care of Randall R Johnson MD PhD from the Neuroscience arrange of Northeast Wisconsin," Pinderski said.
