After a poor start Sunday to the Tour the Gerolsteiner rider - who had a disappointing Tour de France not ever challenging for the overall lead - finally institute his rhythm and won the mountain stage ahead of Kazakhstan's Andrei Kaschechkin and Italy's Marzio Bruseghin.

Germany's Jen Voigt of the CSC team finished fourth and takes throughout the leader's jersey from compatriot Erik Zabel.
